Welcome to Stratasphere!

No, it's not a spelling mistake. It's just a made-up name for the site. All the models used in the illustrations throughout this site were constructed using a FREE, cut-down version of the popular 3D modelling program, Strata 3D. Many of the models I make are constructed from lots of spheres.
So, that's where the name for the site came from.

Considering a lot of the main features are not available in this demo version, I feel I have managed to get by reasonably well. I'm just a poor artist who can't afford to splash out big bucks on 3D software. Anyway, that's not important. I just wanted to have an area where I could keep a quick guide to all my futuristic 3D work.

I always enjoyed using my old airbrush to paint space scenes but now that 3D programs are so advanced I thought I'd give it a try on the computer. The current selection of illustrations on the site were all produced during a four month period from June to September 2001. Until I got a Wacom tablet and pen I didn't dream of attempting any type of painting on the Mac.

I hope you like the site and the illustrations. I've tried to make each section interesting with short descriptions for each image.

I'm a bit of a Sci-Fi junkie and my favourite author is Isaac Asimov (he's passed away now). I regarded the artwork for his book covers as the best futuristic scenes I had ever seen. Many of his books were illustrated by Chris Foss – another of my heroes.

If you've managed to stumble upon my site among the multitude of sites out there, take a moment to send an e-mail with any comments on the site or the content.

I'll try to update the site further, as and when I get around to doing new artwork. It just depends on how long I can keep the interest going as just a hobby.
